Rust on ski edges is common, especially around here. But not all rust is the same — and that’s where confusion usually starts.
A Real Example
In the photo above, you can see dark, continuous rust along the steel edge. This isn’t just surface staining. The rust has worked its way into the edge material, especially near the base. At this point, normal tuning won’t remove it.
What We Consider “Heavy Rust”
We classify rust as heavy when:
It stays after light polishing
The edge surface feels rough or pitted Rust sits deep along the edge, not just on the surface
If it needs manual rust removal before tuning, it’s heavy rust.
Why Heavy Rust Costs More
Heavy rust takes more time:
Extra prep before tuning
Careful material removal Slower, controlled work to protect the edge
That’s why heavy rust removal isn’t included in standard tuning and may cost extra.
How to Avoid It
Dry your edges after riding
Don’t store skis wet Keep up with regular waxing and edge care
A little care goes a long way.
